A Flickr Galaxy…

Olivier over at web-interactif wrote an article this morning on Tag Galaxy . And I have to admit I was quite impressed by that application, which allows you to see all the flickr tags related to the first one you typed in. It’s similar to Tune Glue for Lastfm and have the same kind of visuel effect as PicLens. The visuals are quite nice with planets, galaxies and stars. When you click on a planet you can see all the flickr photographs identified with the aformentioned tag.

Flickr-y habits

To continue the flickr themed week I want to speak about a case study I came across while I was working (thanks Jérôme and Suivez le geek blog). In 2006 (do the maths, it’s almost 2 years old, but it gives us lots of interesting tips) a French team studied how Flickr members are making use of the platform.

- The Pareto principle is once more respected : the study reveals that 20% of users only owns more than 80% of the uploaded photos.

- The study gives plenty of numbers : including the following ones : More than a third of the accounts are completely inactive (which means no uploads and no messages at all). Around 20% of the members are using Flickr as an online community though they’ve never uploaded a public photo (and are therefore keeping their work private).

- Is it possible to establish trends amongst users ? 62% of members have no photo, 65% have no contact, 87% never commented, 84% never received any comments, 93% have no favourite pic. 49% of pro-users only belong and participate in groups.

The datas surely can be updated. It’s been two years now and habits might have been standardized by now. The study still remains one of the most thorough on Flickr . You can view the entire work here :pdf
